What smart B2B brands do in summer while everyone else is on holiday

July and August are strange months in B2B.
Your inbox is suddenly so quiet you think your wifi is down, decision-makers are ghosting you, and the proposals that were almost ready to sign have been completely forgotten. It can feel like the whole business world has collectively decided to take its foot off the gas and there's not much you can do about it.
This is where many marketing teams respond by doing less. Fewer posts, lighter content, a general sense of keeping the engine ticking over until September when the real work starts again.
We think that's the wrong call. And the brands that consistently hit the ground running in Q4 would agree.
The summer slowdown is a gift most businesses don't unwrap
Here's the thing about July and August. The fact that everyone else has mentally checked out isn’t just something to wait out until they’re back to work. It's an advantage, if you use it correctly.
The pressure is off! Finally, the senior people who are usually too busy to sit down and have a proper strategic conversation are suddenly more available. The work that keeps getting bumped because there's always something more urgent has finally got a window.
This is the time to do the thinking that makes everything else work better. Not the urgent stuff. The important stuff.
Start with your messaging
When did you last actually read your own website as if you'd never heard of your company?
Most B2B brands are still running on messaging that was written two or three years ago, approved in a hurry, and never properly revisited. The world has changed. Your clients' problems have changed. The competitive landscape has changed. But the homepage still sounds like 2022.
Spend an hour this week reading everything your brand puts out publicly. Your website, your LinkedIn bio, your most recent posts. Ask yourself honestly whether it speaks to the problems your clients have right now, or the problems you thought they had when you last updated the copy.
If it sounds stiff, generic or just slightly off, that's not a small thing to fix later. That's the foundation everything else is built on, and summer is the time to sort it out!
Have the strategy conversation you keep postponing
Yeh, we all have that reminder we keep moving until next week!
To have the conversation about what's actually working in your marketing and what isn't. Where someone has to say out loud that the content strategy isn't working the way it should, or that the positioning feels muddier than it used to, or that the agency relationship needs a reset.
This conversation is almost impossible to have well during a busy quarter. There's always a campaign to finish, a report to write, a crisis to manage. The urgent always wins over the important.
Summer is when the important finally gets its turn.
So book the time in! Get the right people in the room, or on a call. Ask the questions that usually get avoided. What are we actually trying to achieve? Is our current approach the right one? What needs to change before Q4?
The brands that arrive in September with clarity and momentum had this conversation in summer. The ones scrambling to catch up didn't.
Build your content pipeline now
Here's something we see constantly. A B2B brand wants to publish consistently and show up as a genuine voice in their industry. They start strong in January, trail off by March, and by Q3 they're posting sporadically and wondering why their engagement is flat.
Consistent content doesn't happen because a team is disciplined enough to come up with ideas every week under pressure. It happens because someone sat down at a quieter moment and built the pipeline in advance!
August is that moment.
Brief the topics you want to cover in Q4 and decide which formats are going to do the most work. Map it out on a calendar. You don't need to write everything now, you just need to know what you're building so that when September hits and the pressure is back, you're executing a plan rather than starting from scratch.
Brief your agency or partner
Almost every business we talk to has a project sitting in the "we really must get to that" pile.
A website that needs refreshing, a content strategy that's never quite been properly built, basically a brand that's drifted and needs pulling back together.
The reason these projects keep getting pushed is almost never budget or ambition. It's headspace. There's never a good moment to start something that requires proper thinking when every week is full.
Summer is the good moment.
Your agency or partner has the same lighter calendar you do. The briefing conversations are less rushed and the creative thinking can actually happen properly. And if you start the work now, you'll have something meaningful in place before the year gets busy again.
Whatever has been sitting on the pile, this is the week to pick it up.
September is closer than it feels
It always is!
The teams that arrive back in September with sharp messaging, a full content calendar, a strategy conversation already had and a project already in motion don't get there by accident. They made a deliberate decision in summer to use the quieter weeks for something more valuable than going through the motions.
The teams that spend September catching up, re-briefing, restarting and wondering where Q4 went made a different decision. Usually not a conscious one. They just let summer roll by them rather than using it.
You've still got time. Not much, but enough!
What's the one thing that would make the biggest difference to your marketing in Q4? That's where to start this week.
At Mach Media we help B2B brands use moments like this well. Whether it's a messaging audit, a strategy session, a content pipeline or a full agency brief, we're set up to move quickly and think clearly. If August feels like the right time to finally have that conversation, we'd love to hear from you.
